On September 1, 2016, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation commemorative banknotes with a face value of 20 hryvnias, dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko.

For the production of this commemorative banknote, an innovative technology was used for the first time - paper for the banknote was produced with the addition of Ukrainian flax fibers.

Until recently, the paper base of the Ukrainian hryvnia consisted of 100% cotton (not wood pulp, like most papers in general use, but cotton fiber).

Only in 2016 was it decided to use Ukrainian flax in the process of making banknote paper. After all, the properties of flax fibers due to the structural features of their anatomical structure, chemical composition and high degree of polymerization show an advantage in providing the mechanical strength of the base paper.

The idea of using an alternative to cotton in the production of money is original, but not unique. This is a well-known practice in the banking industry. For example, there have been cases of using fibers from rice straw or Manila hemp - plants of the banana family - to make money. A current example of long-term successful use of the same flax fibers is in the production of the paper base for US dollars.

The partial replacement of imported cotton raw materials with Ukrainian linen in the composition of paper not only increased the strength and wear resistance of modern hryvnia banknotes by 5-10%, but also reduced the cost of money production, because the cost of domestic linen raw materials is somewhat lower than imported cotton fiber. The project is implemented without capital investments. Instead, it provides an opportunity to support the national producer of goods and promote the creation of new jobs in Ukraine.

The National Bank developed this banknote with the aim of improving the technology of manufacturing banknotes of the national currency of Ukraine and their protection elements. While working on its creation, the most modern innovative technologies were implemented both in design and in the protection system.

The following modern optically variable security elements are also introduced on the banknote: – "window" RAPID security tape with a width of 6 mm with the effect of the movement of background images

The actual banknote may have a different prefix and serial number.
