The contents of this collection in a condensed but explanatory way. When catalogue reference numbers are quoted the first one is Stanley Gibbons No. (SG). And the second one is Vlastos No.

    Volume I

On the first page of Volume I it is explained how these stamps were printed and shows the layers that made up the plat to give different degrees of pressure. This is very interesting an essential for gaining the understanding of how the majority of the Hermes Heads were printed. The following two pages show examples of Essays that were never adopted designs and consequently never issued. This too is interesting in so much as it shows the history of the stamp before it is issued. The next page has various proofs and colour trials. These are taking from the actual plates after the designs has been adopted and they were deciding on the colour of the stamp to be printed. The pages that follow contains stamps from the 1861 issue that were printed in Paris. They contain both unused and used copies of the 1 Lepta SG1, mint copies of the 2 Lepta olive bistre, including a pair which is SG2; two used examples of the 5 Lepta SG3; 3 mint copies including a pair of the 20 Lepta blue SG4; there is a superb example of a mint verticle pair of the 40 Lepta and three used examples and finally the 80 Lepta is represented by two single stramps and six used ones with various postmarks one being on piece, one with postmark No. 97 from Alexandria and the other a pair. Following this section are several sheets containing plate proofs and coloured trails of the 1L, 2L, 5L, 20L and 40L. Following this section are some examples of the 10L red orange used showing various cancellations including that of Constantinople, and amongst the varieties is one of the “0”of the “10” inverted which appeared only twice on the sheet, those being stamps number 4 and 88, thus this is scarce. To finish off the Volume there are a few more example of the 20 Lepta, 5 Lepta, and some Entires, one of paper. (pellure paper is paper which is extremely thin with an oily texture). All Entires are in fine condition.

    Volume 2
Volume no 2. starts with the first Athens print on cream paper, which is SG8 VL. The 1L is shown by five unused example including one showing a flaw and three used examples. Then it continues to the 5 Lepta which is SG11 VL 10. Here we have numerous unused and used copies all showing shade varieties and control number varieties. Also in this section is a 5 Lepta on piece. The next section shows examples of the 10 Lepta (SG12) with both mint and used examples, also included is a piece bearing a 20L and 10L tied by numeral cancels 67. This is an early usage of these stamps the 20 lepta being of the previous Paris printing.

Next we have numerous examples of the 20 lepta blue SG13, which many are on paper or entire, including one variety of one mis-placed 20 in reverse. The next section is of the 40 Lepta SG14 and here we have three mint examples two without gum and the other being with the yellow wash on the front. This is an extremely rare stamp in good condition, as this is, and has an approximately catalogue value of around GBP 4000. This is a lovely specimen to have in a collection. Also included are several used examples of this stamp showing various cancellations and varieties in shade and control figures. Again also included are two entires one bearing a 5L, 20L and 40L, the 5L having a yellow wash and it bears a very fine strike of the Constantinople c.d.s. The other wrapper bears a 5L, 20L 40L all are neatly tied and in quite good conditions, both are very fine covers. Finally in this section is the 80 Lepta of Jun 1862 SG15 VL 27. Here we have a fine block of six of this stamp cancelled with Constantinople postmarks and also a few singles. Then there is an Entire with 2L, 10L, 20L and SOL dated the 7th March 1863. All in fine condition. This is a very fine Entire. And secondly there is a 5 Lepta first Athens and a 1 Lepta 1863 on a complete newspaper dated 13th December 1863. A very faint 96 postmark can just be discerned. This is a very scarce item and much sought after by collectors. There are then ten sheets containing varieties in shades et cetera of the 1 Lepta bearing various postmarks. Then it continues to the 2 Lepta 1862-1867 group, off which there is a fine array including 2 unused blocks of 6 and a block of 4 and several other used copies showing varieties in postmarks, including those of Constantinople, Alexandria and Salonika. At the end of this section there is a piece bearing two 1 Lepta stamps, two 2 Lepta stamps a 20 Lepta and a 40 Lepta. This is a fine piece in reasonable condition. Then it moves onto the 5 Lepta the same group[ and here there are several mint copies and some used copies, together with an Entire bearing a 5 Lepta, a 10 Lepta , and a 20 lepta, each tied by a Piraeus c.d.s (the 5 Lepta is a very falsed and over inked impression). And finally there is the 10 lepta SG 19a pale orange yellow on bluish paper. This is a fine mint copy with almost all of its gum and good margins all round.

    Volume 3

This volume contains material of King George I from 1867 to the end of the 1870-71 set. In the 1867-69 set, SG23-29 VL 35 to 41, the 1 Lepta has four examples used showing varieties in colour, the 5 Lepta is shown by a pair and a single used the 10 lepta SG26 VL 37 has over a dozen single used items, several pairs used showing varieties, a mint example and a cover bearing a pair of the 10 lepta and a 5 Lepta. The 20 lepta SG 27 has two mint examples and numerous used examples showing varieties in colour and control markings, which include varieties of such as the double 20. Also included are two Entires  one bearing two 20 Lepta an a 5 Lepta, the other a verticle strip of three, of the 20L from Trieste this is quite a scarce. SG 28 the Lepta is well illustrated with about 20 min and used examples showing varieties in shad an finally in this section SG29 VL 41 the 80 lepta there is a fine used copy of this.

Then in 1870 a special printing was made in Athens under the supervision of German workman. These are listed as SG30 and 31 VL 42 and 43. Both the 1 L and 20 L are well shown the 20 L showing the variety of the 20 inverted, and there is also mint example of SG 31a, which is an extremely rare stamp and has a catalogue value of around GBP 1000.

The final section in this volume is an 1870-71 set again all the values are well demonstrated (except the 10 Lepta), and included in this section is an example of the “02” as opposed to “20”,  and also a cover bearing a 20 Lepta with the same variety as previous. This on cover is extremely rare, and is in fact not listed in the catalogue. Also included is an Entire bearing a 10 lepta, 20 Lepta, and 40 Lepta, and a mint example of the 80 lepta showing variety “8” instead of “80”.

    Volume 4

Volume 4 contains the issues 1880 -1887, and is fully comprehensive in the imperf issues. Amongst the interesting items are specimens of the 1L, 2L, and 5L, various entires, and irregular block of 7 of the 10L orange used, and many interesting unused blocks of the 20 Lepta in many shades some of which are very severe in colour. As in all the volumes there are many mint and used singled pairs and strips of three, blocks of four showing shade varieties and paper varieties. You will not however find in this issue varieties in the control numbers on the back as they were not issued with the same.

    Volume 5

Volume 5 contains material from SG19 VL 31 to SG22 VL 34 there are a dozen normal 10L stamps which were printed between years 1862 to 67. Some of these have interesting postmarks which include those from Alexandria and Constantinople, also included is an example of the figure 10 on the back inverted, there are 6 examples of both red and orange figures on the back; and shade varieties of the 10L being orange on blue and orange on greenish. Also included are examples of figures “01” instead of “10”there is a pair showing this and a single , there is also a pair showing a postmark of Constantinople. Also included in this section are two Entires one being an 1864 Entire bearing a pair of the 10 L yellow orange shade, this is scarce, and the other Entire being 1869 which bears a 10L and a 80L and was posted from Liverpool to Greece. (The stamp duty was not charged at Liverpool as there were no UPU ties with Greece at that time and therefore when it arrived in Greece the rate was fixed to the Entire and charged to the recipient.

Next is SG20 VL No 32. The 20 Lepta blue on bluish, there are three examples of this stamp mint, and in used condition there are eight single stamps showing varieties in postmark and shades (i.e. SG20a and SG20c). There is also an example of the 20L used in Janina which is scarce. There is also a corner marginal used pair and two dozen of so, showing varieties in the figure control numbers on the back in light , dark, heavy, faint, impressions etc. There are three examples of SG 20F dated 1867. Also included in this section is one item which is not catalogued unused, but only used, this is SG 20G of VL 32J which is an error in the control number having an “80” instead of a “20” on the back, this is extremely rare.

In the section of the 40 Lepta lilac SG21, VL 33, there are several copies and about a dozen so used copies showing varieties of postmark including those of Constantinople and Alexandria. Another interesting item is that of the 40L, which is printed with paper fold (i.e. when the stamp went through the press it was accidentally folded and when subsequently the stamp was flattened out there is nothing in the space that was ink impressed). There is also an Entire in this section bearing one 40L stamp.

The last section in this volume is that of the 80L SG22 VL 34. There are five mint examples of this 80L including a marginal pair, and about two dozen used examples showing various cancellations and shades i.e. SG A and B numbers and including a scarce block of four and two pairs one horizontal and one vertical, the vertical one being the scarcer of the two. There is also an example of the “80”in “80”being inverted on the back of one of the stamps, and an Entire dated 1869 bearing a pair and a single of the 80 Lepta, a single of the 10 Lepta (SG 19c) and a single of the 20 Lepta (SG20) this went from Manchester to Greece and the same applied about the postage applied before.

    Volume 6

This volume consists of the issues dated 1872-75 and also the 1967 30L and 60L issue. In the 1L SG 39 there are half dozen mint and half dozen used single stamps, and a mint block of four they all show shade and control number varieties. In the 5L SG 40 of this section there are 40 or so items in both min and uses pairs and singles, showing shade and control number varieties, including “01”instead of “10” on both stamps. This is an extremely rare cover, (which we have only just realized was included!); an estimated price in the region of GBP 1000. The 20 L deep blue section contains two entires, one with a single 20 L the other with a 10L and a 20L tied by Constantinople postmark which is quite scarce. Also included in this section are a dozen or so mint and used singles showing various varieties such as the “20”with raised “0”, keyhole variety this is rare , (the centre ring of the “0”, instead of being round is shaped like a keyhole). The 40L shows varieties, blocks of four, and about 10 mint and used stamps, showing variety in either shade of control figure, same applies to the two dozen or so used singles, of pairs. Among the varieties also here are the double “40”control number and the “40”with a keyhole variety. Also included is a used example of SG 43a and an entire bearing a single of the 40L, 10L, and 5 L of this period, a very fine three colour combination cover.

In the 1876 issue was printed without figures on the back. There are several examples both mint and used of the Paris print of the 30 and 60 Lepta showing shade varieties; and of the 30 and 60 Lepta Athens print, again there are several examples and three Entires bearing a single “30” Lepta stamp.

    Volume 7

Volume 7 contains material from the 1875-1880 area SG45 which is the 1 Lepta (VL61) to the 40L, SG 50 VL 66. In the 1 Lepta area there are six single mint stamps showing varieties in shade and control numbers, there is a mint strip of three and six separate block of four, all varying in shades or control varieties. SG46 VL 62 is the 2 Lepta bistre or stone. There are half a dozen of both mint and used copies, as before showing control varieties and shade, the pairs are mint pairs or blocks of four all in fine condition. The 5 Lepta SG47 VL 63. There are 30 or so single copies yellow green stamps each showing varieties in control number and shade. There are also four used pairs and an Entire dated 1879 bearing a verticle pair of the 5 Lepta and a single of 20 Lepta; this is a fine cover.

The 10 Lepta orange section (SG48 VL 64), comprises of two Entires, one 1881 the other 1889. The first bearing two singles of the 10 Lepta and cancelled by a blue cancel which is scarce, and the other bearing a pair of the 10 Lepta. Then there are many varieties in both single and pairs, mint and used including a variety of control figure on the back where the “1” is missing, (so instead of reading “10” it reads “0”), and the double printing of “10” on back of another single.

The same is true of the 20 Lepta SG49, VL 65, which amongst its many items contains two examples of “02”instead of “20”on back, and three examples of the 2 in 20 instead. There are many varieties like this including missing “0”, keyhole variety, a space between the two and the Zero, and dropped “0”variety. There is also an entire dated 1877, bearing a single 20L on blue which is in fine condition. Finally in this section the 40L buff SG50, VL66 which includes two blocks of four in mint condition, three singles in mint condition and five used singles.
