Colonel Charles deforest Chandler [1878 1939] was an American pioneering military aviator,  Early Bird member and World War I commander who was appointed as the first head of the Aeronautical Division of the United States Signal Corps which later became the United States Air Force. Colonel Chandler holds the distinction of being the first aviator to fire a machine gun from a airplane in flight. The event took place on June 7, 1912 when Chandler accompanied by Lieutenant Roy Kirtland flew a Wright Model B at College Park, Maryland and fired a Lewis machine gun which was mounted to the Wright aircraft. During World War I he commanded the balloon section of the American Expeditionary Forces and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. Listed for auction is a rare [ALS] autograph letter signed by Colonel Charles deforest Chandler on his personal letterhead. The letter is addressed to a collector, dated Oct 27, 1937 and is signed ''C. deF. Chandler'' in black fountain pen. The letter measures 6.50 x 5.75 inches, it is in fine condition and will be accompanied by its original transmittal envelope.
