Oyster plant light, location and temperature

Lighting

You'll have to give your Tradescantia spatacea plenty to keep it happy. Direct sunlight is not ideal, especially not strong afternoon sunlight. Instead, place this plant in a location that receives indirect light.

If the imperfect light conditions aren't constant, it's not as problematic, but you'll notice that your oyster plant is starting to stretch, trying to reach the sky. Also, if you have a selected cultivar with bright purple leaves, it may return to its natural green color in low light.

location

Aside from its demand for plenty of light, Tradescantia spatacea is not picky at all when it comes to its preferred location in your home.

Temperature

As mentioned earlier, Tradescantia spathacea does not do well in low temperatures. Stay away from cold windows in winter.

Planting oysters

As with other aspects of oyster plant care, potting your Tradescantia spatacea is a breeze. Complex soil mixtures are not necessary as long as the excess water can be drained without the soil drying out quickly. Mix potting soil with a small amount of perlite for added drainage.

Watering the oyster plant

As for watering, Tradescantia spathacea is not very difficult. In summer it will appreciate light moist soil when it is actively growing. Allow the first inch or so to dry out before watering again, which comes down to watering about twice a week.

In winter, when indoor plants do not have much growth, you can reduce watering. Let the soil dry a little more; About once a week should work well during this period.
