Anodes protect submerged metals from galvanic corrosion and are part of the boat maintenance cycle. The kind of water determines which boat anode you should choose. Galvanic corrosion in saltwater, brackish water, and freshwater has a distinct reaction to the many boat anodes on the market today. Aluminum anode alloy is more resistant to corrosion than zinc and lasts longer. It works in both freshwater and saltwater. The only anode that is suitable for all applications is aluminum. We recommend replacing anodes once a year or when they have half degraded or dissolved. The rate at which anodes dissolve is determined by factors such as usage, location (of your boat), water temperature, and the anode's quality.
