These protective caps are made of PE and have 3mm diameter, 15mm length.or 3mm diameter, 25mm length

They fit "press" (exactly) over the rod ends so do not need to be glued, they hold by their exact measurement and thus prevent rusting, or "further rusting". 

You can also apply the protective caps as a precaution.

The rods are the same thickness in almost all dishwashers !
