DESCRIPTION
Highly interesting and very rare double hemisphere world maps from the second half of the 18th century and one of the very few world maps printed in Lyon.
The hemispheres are border coloured.
In the title banner running along the top edge of the map is a dedication to Bertand Rene Pallu (1692-1758).
Pallu served as intendant of Lyon from 1738 to 1750.
In the centre with a small coat of arms flanked by two white horses jumping out.
Along the lower edge are four women sitting with animals. These represent the continents.
Europe is shown on the left in armour and with a cross; behind her is a horse.
Asia burns incense and holds a sceptre with a crescent moon, the sign of Islam, while a camel looks on. Africa holds a bow and arrow and looks at an elephant.
America is typically represented by an Indian, dressed in feathers and holding a spear; he is guarded by an alligator.
To the left and right are a series of astronomical diagrams; sun, moon, eclipses, winter and summer solstices, and diagrams showing the theories of Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Ptolemy and Descartes. The upper allegorical figures embody the various sciences and arts.
In the centre, above and below, the map contains the celestial hemispheres illustrating the constellations.
In the lower margin of the map with inscription on the left: "Delamonce Inv. Et del. as well as in the centre: "A LYON chez DAUDET Grande rue Merciere".
Attractive colouring in the style of the time.

Good and decorative condition with traces of use. Smoothed centrefold. In the margins with some restorations, visible only against the light. Lower centrefold with restored loss outside the plate (see detailed photos). Lower corner with restored tear on verso, this also only visible against the light. Small restored worm trace in the title at the top.

Hochinteressante und sehr seltene Doppelhemisphären-Weltkarten aus der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts und eine der ganz wenigen Weltkarten, die in Lyon gedruckt wurden. Die Hemisphären sind grenzkoloriert.
Im Titelbanner, das am oberen Rand der Karte verläuft, befindet sich eine Widmung an Bertand Rene Pallu (1692-1758). Pallu diente als Intendant von Lyon von 1738 bis 1750.
Mittig mit kleinem Wappen flankiert von zwei hervorspringenden weißen Pferden.
Entlang des unteren Randes sind vier Frauen mit Tieren sitzend dargestellt. Diese verkörpern die Kontinente. Europa ist links in Rüstung und mit einem Kreuz dargestellt; hinter ihr liegt ein Pferd. Asien verbrennt Weihrauch und hält ein Zepter mit einer Mondsichel, dem Zeichen des Islam, während ein Kamel zuschaut. Afrika hält Pfeil und Bogen und blickt auf einen Elefanten.
Amerika wird typischerweise von einem Indianer dargestellt, in Federn gekleidet und einen Speer haltend wird er von einem Alligator bewacht.
Links und rechts sind eine Reihe von astronomischen Diagrammen dargestellt; Sonne, Mond, Finsternisse, Winter- und Sommersonnenwende sowie Diagramme mit den Theorien von Kopernikus, Tycho Brahe, Ptolemäus und Descartes. Die oberen allegorischen Figuren verkörpern die verschiedenen Wissenschaften und Künste.
Mittig, oben und unten, enthält die Karte die Himmelshalbkugeln, die die Sternbilder veranschaulichen.
Im unteren Kartenrand mit Bezeichnung links: "Delamonce Inv. Et del. sowie mittig: "A LYON chez DAUDET Grande rue Merciere".

Guter und dekorativer Zustand mit Gebrauchsspuren. Geglätteter Mittelfalz. In den Rändern mit einigen Restaurierungen, die nur im Gegenlicht sichtbar sind. Unten im Mittelfalz mit restaurierter Fehlstelle außerhalb der Platte (siehe detaillierte Fotos). Untere Ecke verso mit restauriertem Einriss, dieser ebenfalls nur im Gegenlicht sichtbar. Kleine restaurierte Wurmspur im Titel oben.
