Lafayette Mc Laws [1821 1897] was a United States Army officer and Confederate general in the American Civil War. He began his military career in 1842 and was a veteran of the Mexican American War. At the start of the American Civil War, he was a U.S. captain, McLaws resigned his commission and joined the Confederate Army as a colonel. Mc Laws proved to be a capable commander and fought at the Seven Dats Battle, Battle of Harpers Ferry, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville and the Battle of Gettysburg. At the Battles of both Antietam and Fredericksburg he was praised by General Robert E. Lee for his leadership and defense of his positions. Listed for auction is the autograph of General Lafayette Mc Laws signed on a page. The autograph is signed ''from L M claw'' in black ink. The page most likely removed from a letter/envelope, measures approximately 3.00 x 1.00 inches and is in very good condition. The autograph is an authentic example of this noted Confederate commander and will be a desirable addition to any Civil War collection.
