Little Drops of Water

St. Vincent

Vincent was a deacon from Zaragoza, in Spain, who lived between the 3rd and 4th centuries. At the time, Emperor Diocletian and Emperor Maximian violently persecuted the Christians, and Vincent was tortured to death.

In the 8th century, during the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, the body of Vincent was placed in a boat adrift at sea, and was found on the coast of the Cape of Sagres, today Cape of Saint Vincent, in Portugal.

In the 12th century, upon conquering Lisbon, King Afonso I fulfilled his promise to find the remains of Vincent. In 1173, the remains were transported on a ship from the Algarve to Lisbon. Legend has it that two crows accompanied and protected the ship throughout the voyage. It is for this reason that the ship and the two crows are very important symbols of the city of Lisbon, of which Saint Vincentis the patron. Saint Vincent's feast day is January 22nd.
