This is an antique novelty inkwell formed into the shape of a sea mine or a Medieval battling mace head.
It is mostly made from turned OAK wood with 8 metal spike studs on the outside.
There is a brass hinged lid in the centre with a little glass well inside.
The brass lid opens by gently pulling the brass catch towards you. The domed lid then springs up and open.
The little clear glass inkwell has a cut sheared lip and a simple cylindrical form. Blown into a simple mould and not pontilled. The clear glass is ink stained.
It is only 1 inch tall. It sits in the recess. I actually didn't know it came out when I photographed it.
The underside of the brass lid has some padding which keeps the ink from coming out when the lid is closed.
No maker's marks etc.
In collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear. The hinged lid is dinted.

It measures approx. 3 inches tall x 3 and 1/4 inches in diameter. It weighs approx. 178 grams.

Scale is usually an English 1 penny coin which is 20mm in diameter which is just short of 7/8ths of an inch in diameter.
