1960 Press Photo Arctic predator: snowy owl spotted in Long Island, New York
This is the snowy owl, Arctic predator once more believed headed south in search of food. The species has been seen recently around Long Island. They may penetrate to the Carolinas, or even Florida. The owls, about two feet long from beak to tail tip, move south periodically as their supply of food diminishes. Their exodus seems to coincide with the scarcity cycle of the lemming, rodent of the far north that achieves enormous numbers then in four years nearly vanishes. Photo measures 8 x 10 inches. Photo is dated 12-5-1960.
