Nommo Shicouroule Niongom (pre-Dogon) wooden statue
Magnificent Nommo Shicouroule Niongom (pre-Dogon) wooden statue, the original human, created by the god Amma. The Niongom, a pre-Dogon people, would have been close neighbors of the Tellem, before the arrival of the Dogon.
The man is leaning in a prayer position, his face turned towards the sky, his arms resting at his sides. These statues embody the original human, created by the god Amma. The original Niongom figures were placed on family altars.
The artisans follow the natural curvature of a tree branch from which these statues are carved, which is rare in African sculpture.
