Beautiful unused piece of rare handpainted and dyed Vintage Silk made for a Boy's Miyamairi "Christening" Kimono with Tiger in Bamboo design.

This fantastic piece of vintage 1980s silk is decorated with a beautiful hand dyed and printed Tiger in Bamboo design on a creamy-white background. The design is beautiful, expressively painted and has gold highlights which catch the light as the silk moves. The silk is of a light weight, soft and flowing.

When a baby is about 30 days old it is taken to a Shinto Shrine for it's first shrine visit called Miyamairi " mairi means visit and Miya means Shrine. The mother or grandmother wraps the baby in the Miyamairi Kimono and the Priest recites the name of the baby. Prayers are then offered for healthy growth and future prospects and gifts of money are then tucked into the Kimono. Boy's Miyamairi Kimono tend to be darker in colour and decorated with Martial Items, Tigers, Hawks, Dragons, Treasure Ships and Cranes while girls are bright and vibrant in colour and decorated with Flowers, Butterflies, Fans and Birds.    

This piece of unused vintage silk is in excellent condition and it is perfect for craft or quilting projects.

I have not ironed this silk.
