Historical context: Teodor Rotrekl (1923-2004) was a Czech artist and illustrator, who mainly devoted himself to the genre of science fiction, but also to educational literature for children.
He was one of the founding members of the Radar artistic group.
His work ranks him among the representatives of new figuration and Czech pop art.
In 1962 and 1963, Rotrekl developed the previous themes, but focused primarily on experiments with painting technique and material. He was interested in the principle of collage, assemblage or the informal technique.
His further artistic development can be seen in works such as Montage Kaplan's Turbine (1963).
He created assemblages and objects into which he built various technical objects.
He glued, for example, buttons, pins, wires or dials, and later also light sources, to solid-lithium boards.
But he soon discovered that he was trying to express a certain message or mission through his work, and he soon abandoned abstract pictorial composition.
In 1968, together with other members of the Radar artistic group, he reacted critically to the occupation by the troops of the Warsaw Pact.
The paintings he exhibited were provocative not only with their titles such as Funeral Celebration (1968), Sorrow and Anger (1968) or Where is My Home (1968–1969), but above all with themes symbolizing the loss of freedom.
He had to withdraw the paintings from the exhibition.
Teodor Rotrekl worked as a typographer, book illustrator, devoted himself to poster creation and also worked in the field of promotional art.
For the Ministry of Education, he created around twenty educational boards with information about working with electricity. They were published under the title "Opatrne S Elektrinou" or "Be Careful With Electricity" in the State Pedagogical Publishing House in 1960.
Similarly, chemistry lessons were also published under the title Prevent fires! (Wiki).
