The mask is surmounted by four horns which represent the female sex. 
The male mask has three horns or six horns symbolizing the six human senses necessary to know the world. The seven-horned mask represents male and female duality or marriage. 
The N'tomo society is the first of six Bambara initiation stages where children discover their adult responsibilities. 
The Bamana people, sometimes called Bambara, are one of the largest ethnic groups in Mali.
