The cayenne pepper is a plant variety of the annual Capsicum species (Capsicum annuum). It is a member of the Solanidae family (Solanaceae). Other varieties of the same plant are sweet peppers, jalapeños, bell peppers.
It is also known as cow-horn pepper, red hot chili pepper, aleva, bird pepper or especially in powder form, red pepper. It was first described as Guinea spice in 1653. It was named in honor of the city of Cayenne, in French Guiana.
