About the Figures

Any racing track layout may be given new life and interest with these finely sculptured, Racing Timing Tower and modern costumed, hightly detailed 1/32 scale figures and markers.

Extremely crisp fine detailing has been incorporated into these well proportioned little people by the finest professional sculptors in the country.  There is no need to cement body halves or arms and legs together since the figures are mounted on bases to permit moving them from one location to another.  Use cement specified for styrene plastic to join small parts such as wheel halves in the Drivers and Pit Crew Set.

Painting

You will enjoy painting the figures in your set to give them the final touch of interest.  Supplies you will need are paint, thinner, one or two brushes and a soft cloth for cleaning the brushes.  Use a quick drying paint such as Testors Pla which is made for styrene plastic.

Remember to purchase thinner for your paints to thin them for easier brushing.  The paint may be a little thick as it comes in the bottle.  The thinner is also used to clean your paint brushes.  There are no set rules on thinning the paint, just keep it thin enough to flow smoothly with a few brush strokes.  Don't worry if the first coat does not cover completely.  Allow the paint to dry and apply a second or third coat if necessary.  Two or three thin coats will cover better than one thick coat and will not hide the fine detailing on the figures.

A good  quality "0" or "00" camels hair or red sable brush will make painting easier, will do a better job and will last longer than a cheap brush.  Always clean the brush thoroughly with paint thinner and wipe it dry when switching from one color to the next.  With proper care your brush will last indefinitely,

Paint the faces and hands of your figures flesh.  Drivers' coveralls are either white or light blue with white, red, black or yellow helmets.  Drivers' gloves and shoes are brown or black.  Mechanics coveralls can be white, tan or dark green.  A wide variety of colors can be used for the clothing of the other figures.  The selection of colors is your choice.  The base attached to the feet of each figure should be painted to match the color of the surface on which it will be placed.  Half tires in the Trackside Markers Set may remain yellow or can be painted black or white.  Marker cones have a black base and a red top.  The yellow hay bales do not need painting.

Your painted figures will have a natural appearance with a flat finish.  Apply a coat of flat varnish, or spray Testors Dulcote over the figures to eliminate the gloss.

Racing Scenes

One or all of the Monogram figure sets can be used to create interesting action scenes on your 1/32 scale racing layout.  A busy pit stop for instance can be created with the Driver and Pit Crew set using the crewman with the fueling nozzle and hose, the standing driver with helmet held in his left hand while drinking a bottle of soda, the mechanic lying on his back making a mechanical adjustment underneath a car and the other members of the crew arranged around the car at their various jobs.

 MONOGRAM

Slot racing golden era’s most important company after Cox, Monogram used their tremendous molding talents to produce the sharpest injected bodies in the business. They made their entry unlike most, immediately offering seven 1/24 and two 1/32 kits without ever having offered spare parts prior to this impressive introduction, in the middle of 1964. The 1/24 bodies were recycled static kits with extra molded parts for mounting on a 3-piece brass flat pan chassis, equipped with the earliest metallic red-painted FT16 motor. The bodies were sitting in the center of the colorful kit boxes, and as usual for Monogram products, instructions were very complete and well illustrated. Racing decals adorned them, most unlikely subjects for slot cars. The ’34 and ’36 Ford coupes, ’40 Ford pick-up truck and ’55 Chevy hardtop coupe were joined late in 1964 by a Duesenberg double-phaeton and a Mercedes-Benz 540K, obviously not your everyday drag racing units.

My Dad owned a Hobby Shop that closed in the early 1970's, and he kept some of the more interesting slot cars and accessories from that era.  The items I am listing are in most cases, near new or gently used.  I have taken many pictures to show every angle and have tried to describe all features and/or flaws to the best of my ability.  Please email with any questions specific to something I may have missed.
