ANNE FRANCES, COUNTESS OF FALMOUTH, is daughter of Henry Bankes, Esq.
of Kingston Hall, Dorsetshire; and wife of Edward Boscowen, Earl of
Falmouth, Viscount Falmouth, and Baron Boscowen-Rose, in Cornwall, from
which county the family derives its name and lineage. The Viscounty and
Barony derive immediately from Hugh Boscowen-Rose, Esq., who was
Comptroller of the Household, and Privy Councillor, in 1714, on the accession of George
the First; and was elevated to the peerage in 1720, as Baron of
Boscowen-Rose, and Viscount Falmouth. These honors descended to the
present Earl through George Evelyn, third Viscount, who was son of the
justly celebrated Admiral Boscowen. This distinguished naval hero
achieved the most eminent services in North America, and
received the thanks of Parliament for the same on the 6th December 1758.
- Lord Falmouth is also allied by marriage to the great Duke
of Marlborough; Hugh Boscowen, the first Earl, having married a
maternal niece of that celebrated military commander.
He is also nearly connected, both lineally and by marriage, with the
Somerset family; Elizabeth, daughter of Admiral the Honorable Edward
Boscowen, and sister of George Evelyn, third Viscount Falmouth, having
married (in 1776) Henry, fifth Duke of Beaufort; and the present Earl's
sister, the Honorable Elizabeth Boscowen, having married (in 1808) Lord
Arthur John Henry Somerset, son of the above- named Henry, fifth Duke
of Beaufort, and brother of the late Duke. The Earldom was created in
the person of the present Earl, on the 14th of July 1821. The present
Earl is Recorder of Christ's Church and Truro.
