This is an original document archive, from the papers of Chaplain George Gorham of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry. The main item in this archive is an 8 page letter dated April 2, 1865, City Point Virginia. In this letter, Chaplain Gorham has written to his wife Emily regarding some suttler pricing, a battle in which thousands were killed or wounded (Seige of Petersburg)... an army of black soldiers are forming, over a million...at this point Gorham writes from June 15th while attending a black worship service. Gorham writes about the sentiments of the black congregation, where there is great merriment among the black worshippers. A great letter, complete, signed at closing Hubby.

Also in the archive is a four page undated and unsigned letter to Emily regarding the thoughts of the black military force with great detail about the black presence ...

The archive also includes three other civil war dated letters, two from Emily to George and other miscellaneous letters dated before the war.

Overall, a great archive, see scans for more content.
