Victorian Gold Classical shell Cameo Brooch of Demeter
A classic Victorian Cameo depicting the Goddess Demeter mounted in a rose gold collet setting with ornate frame.
The cameo has been hand carved from a Queen Anne Conch shell (from the waters of the Caribbean), artfully sculpted in high relief it shows the profile of Demeter wearing a wheat headdress, her profile is facing to the left making this cameo rarer than the more commonly right facing ones.
Complete with T-bar & C-clasp fitting (can easily adapt to a pendant so that it can be worn as either a brooch or pendant). Its generous size, along with the intricate detailing of the carving make this brooch a fantastic statement piece, and a highly collectable antique.
In Greek mythology, Demeter was the ancient Greek goddess of Harvest. She taught humans how to plant, plough & nurture the earth to provide food. Her Roman name was Ceres, which is where the word 'cereal' comes from.
