"In this work, there is something very important to me, I felt that way from the beginning." - Murakami Haruki Murakami Haruki's latest full-length novel, "City and Its Uncertain Wall," has a special story intertwined with its writing and publication. Since his debut in 1979, Haruki has published various writings, including novels, in various literary magazines, most of which have been officially compiled and published into books. Among them, the only work that remained a long-standing mystery among fans for not being published as a standalone book was the mid-length novel "City and Its Uncertain Wall" (1980), published in the literary magazine "Literary World."
In 2020, as walls began to rise between people due to COVID-19, he thought he could finally refine and complete the work that had been buried for forty years. After three years of writing, he released the three-part novel "City and Its Uncertain Wall" to the world. The author, in his 70s and consistently generating the "Haruki Syndrome" with each new work, finally completed the world he had envisioned during his youth, 43 years later.
"Among the novels I've written, there's almost none that hasn't been turned into a book, but this work has never been published in Japan or any other country. (...) In the meantime, I went from being thirty-one to seventy. (...) Anyway, being able to rewrite (or complete) this work in a new form made me honestly feel very relieved. This work has always been a presence that bothered me like a fishbone stuck in my throat. (...) It was, again, a thorn with significant meaning for me (for me as a writer, for me as a human). Writing it anew after forty years and returning to 'that city,' I keenly felt the truth of it once again." - Murakami Haruki, in the author's postscript to "City and Its Uncertain Wall"
