Biography:

Stefano initially became known for his huge street-art murals, and paintings on leather jackets collected and prized by Warhol and other celebrities. Castronovo currently works in Berlin on figurative paintings on paper and canvas of realistic female nudes and other themes. To quote Glenn O’Brien, “Stefano Castronovo is an Italian artist, a master painter who made a huge impact on downtown New York in the ’80s with controversial paintings and murals.” Recent presentations of Castronovo’s work include group shows such as The Sisley Art Project at the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Area Club exhibition at The Hole, curated by Jeffrey Deitch. Recent commissions include a new collection of iconic jacket paintings for Patricia Field, and murals for the lobbies of the Maritime and Bowery hotels in New York. Throughout Stefano’s career he has presented work alongside Vito Acconci, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mike Bidlo, Jonathan Borofsky, David Bowes, Fred Brathwaite, James Brown, Christo, Francesco Clemente, George Condo, Arch Connelly, Jay Coogan, Ronnie Cutrone, Brett de Palma, Jane Dickson, Frank Faulkner, Futura 2000, Nan Goldin, Keith Haring, Robert Hawkins, Frank Holliday, Jenny Holzer, Ellsworth Kelly, John Lennon, Sean Lennon, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Mapplethorpe, Robert Morris, Yoko Ono, Robert Rauschenberg, Kenny Scharf, Julian Schnabel, Richard Serra, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, Michael Tracy, Tseng Kwong Chi, Andy Warhol and others.
