THE MANThe baby Stetson, a Texan native,
was born in 1923 in the small town of Leesburg, located just east of Dallas.
He graduated from Dallas' Woodrow Wilson High in 1940 and joined the U.S. Army
Air Corps. During his time as a WWII flight instructor and test pilot, he romantically
courted his fiancee by dropping boots filled with love letters onto her farmland
from his airplane. Shelby also tried his hand at dump trucking, roughnecking,
and chicken farming before finally deciding to pursue his passion for hot-rodding.
THE LEGENDDuring the period from 1954 to 1960, Carroll
Shelby showed his natural talent by winning four races while driving borrowed
cars. He was then recruited by the Aston Martin team, and he went on to race
in various parts of the United States and Europe. People admired Shelby for
his fearless attitude, calm driving, and his trademark striped overalls. One
day, while in a hurry to get from the farm to the racetrack, he gained some
attention by driving in his work overalls - but this soon became his signature
look, along with his black Stetson hat, which you can see on our packaging.
Shelby was a quick-witted Texan who once won a race with his arm taped to
the steering wheel after it had been shattered. He is considered one of the
greatest racecar drivers of all time and was twice chosen as Sports Illustrated's
Driver of the Year. His victories were numerous, including at Torry Pines and
the Le Mans 24-hour race. He was also responsible for creating the famous Shelby
muscle cars by fitting Ford's big V8 engine into a lightweight English roadster.
After developing the Cobra, he was asked to work on another famous sports car:
the Ford Mustang. Even today, his special-edition Mustangs are highly regarded
and sought after by collectors, just like his impeccable taste. Though he retired
early due to a heart condition, Shelby continued to make history as a designer.
Shelby approached his cars the way he approached his chili: by starting
with a base, tweaking it to his taste, and taking off in whichever direction

Try this RecipeRACE-DAY BRISKET CHILI4 Tablespoons. - olive oil
4 lbs. - trimmed beef brisket, cut into ¾-inch
cubes
2 - large onions, minced
6 - cloves garlic, minced
1½ cups -
red wine
1½ cups - favorite store-bought smoky barbecue sauce
1 oz. -
square unsweetened chocolate

cup - sun-dried tomatoes, slivered
DirectionsHEAT
2 Tablespoons of oil in a large pot, and brown brisket in batches over medium-high
heat, adding more oil as needed. When cooked, transfer to a platter.
ADD onions and garlic to pot; sauté 10 minutes. Stir in wine and barbecue sauce,
then add chocolate and stir until melted. Season with large Spices packet from
Carroll Shelby’s Chili Kit, add Cayenne Pepper packet, and salt to taste. Add
sun-dried tomatoes and browned brisket.
COVER and simmer chili over low
heat, stirring occasionally. Continue simmering for another 1 to 1½ hours, or
until meat is very tender. Serve hot.
