SEA ANGLING WITH THE BAITED SPOON By "SEANGLER" [John P. Garrad] HERBERT JENKINS LTD 1960 1st edition. 22 x 14 cm. 160 pp + b/w photo plates. HB/DJ It was as long ago as the turn of the century that the idea of using a baited spoon first aroused John Garrad's interest. As a means of catching fish it was then unheard of by the great body of anglers, and he decided to put it to the test. Somewhat to his surprise he found it worked, and from that time onwards he has experimented almost ceaselessly with every sort of baited spoon and spinner. With the true enthusiast's attention to detail he kept precise records of trials, failures and successes, and in this book he draws briefly on the first two and lengthily on the last. Even as recently as ten years ago, the interest in a book such as this would have been restricted to only a handful of readers. Few knew anything about baited lures and, anyway, the methods recommended applied almost solely to flounder fishing. The situation now, however, is quite different. The baited spoon now catches many species of fish and because of this there is a lively and growing interest in it all .over the country. Because of his fifty years of unbroken experiment, John Garrad is the acknowledged authority on all matters relating to baited spoon fishing, and in his book he tells us all that is known of this most interesting and successful method. CONTENTS Spoon and spinner history, classification and naming of spoons, baited or unbaited spoons The baited spinner - 1865(?) to 1920 - the basis of the baited spoon method Early spoon experiments - 1920 to 1930 From the experimental stage to a practical method of sea angling Interlude for writing, correspondence and visitors Later experiments, 1936 to 1939 Post-War fishing and experiments Spoons - materials, shapes and colours, hooks - position and types Reports from other anglers The baited spoon for bass fishing The theory of the baited spoon The practical use of the baited spoon - introduction - methods of use - deciding which method to use - the boat and its preparation – tackle Trolling the baited spoon Drifting and bottom fishing with the baited spoon Casting the baited spoon direct from the rod The floating spoon Appendix I: The flounder (Platichthys flesus).
