The history of African shield is deeply tied within a various Africans tribes people like Zulu tribe, Bamileke tribe, etc. African shields were designed to offer protection during battles and combats. Small, lightweight shields offered greater mobility for close combat, and large, heavier ones provided more protection during ground battles.
