"This is how it sounds when bacteria sours milk to acid".

Comes in a grey cardboard sleeve packed inside a grey paper envelope.
An early offering from Mika Vainio, this lone Philus album appeared back in 1998 and caught the producer at his most icy and minimal. It's not easy listening by any means, pre-empting the kind of rhythmic, frequency-bending experimentation of Alva Noto and the Raster Noton label and exploring space and tone without ever dipping into what might be mistaken for techno.
At times it sounds like an eerie sci-fi soundtrack and at others like malfunctioning machinery, malevolent in its passive, logical evil. 'Kuvio 4' is a clear highlight, with repeating tones echoing Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" and a penetrating kick fighting through the anxious, chiming electronics. Unsettling and essential material from a true master of the craft.
