Historical context: Jiri Winter Neprakta was an active participant in the anti-fascist resistance, for which the death penalty was proposed.
The main witness did not appear at the trial, and the judge, who did not want to postpone the trial and could not sentence him to death without a witness, reduced the sentence to six years in the Nazi penitentiary.
He spent this sentence in the Bavarian Nazi penitentiary Bernau by Lake Chiemsee.
He managed to survive and after his release walked from prison to Bohemia on foot.
After the war Neprakta was only reunited with his mother, his father was tortured by the Gestapo during interrogation in Pankrac, the rest of his family perished in Auschwitz.
He was a member of the Czech Union of Freedom Fighters and a medal holder for anti-fascist resistance. He never bragged about his resistance activity.
Neprakta actively participated in the protection of nature and the environment, among other things he was the chairman of the Prague Association of Animal Protectors for several years.
Jiri Winter started out as an illustrator of professional science books (originally he wanted to be a natural scientist, not an artist), later he illustrated several hundred books of entertainment and popular science.
In addition, he was involved in theater and film work (designs of costumes, scenes, backdrops) - his best-known works in this area include, for example, the film Crazy Sad Princess and Coffin in a Dream... or the plays Tezka Barbora and Osel a shadow.
He also collaborated with Laterna magika on the preparation of a new program.
Jiri Winter Neprakta was a very prolific author who drew more than 35,000 cartoon jokes during his lifetime (he is listed in the Guinness Book of Records /2001/) and illustrated hundreds humorous books.
He also worked on animated films, book illustrations and toy designs (Wiki).
