The 463rd Bombardment Group (Heavy) was a unit of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. It was activated in 1943 as part of the Eighth Air Force in England. The 463rd flew B-17 Flying Fortress bombers and participated in strategic bombing campaigns against Nazi-occupied Europe.

Activation and Training: The 463rd Bombardment Group was activated on 1 May 1943 at Geiger Field, Washington. After its activation, the group underwent intensive training in the United States, preparing for combat operations in Europe.

  1. Deployment to England: In November 1943, the 463rd Bombardment Group was deployed to the European Theater of Operations (ETO) and stationed at RAF Debach in Suffolk, England. Upon arrival, the group became part of the Eighth Air Force.


  2. Combat Operations: The 463rd flew its first combat mission on 6 December 1943, targeting industrial facilities in France. Throughout the war, the group participated in numerous strategic bombing raids over enemy-occupied territory, targeting military and industrial sites, as well as transportation infrastructure.


  3. Missions and Campaigns: The 463rd Bombardment Group participated in major campaigns, including the bombing campaign against German aircraft manufacturing plants, oil refineries, and transportation networks. Some of the significant missions included attacks on Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and other strategic targets.


  4. Recognition and Awards: The 463rd Bombardment Group received several awards and commendations for its service during World War II, including the Distinguished Unit Citation for its actions during the Big Week bombing campaign in February 1944.


  5. Post-War Disbandment: After the end of the war in Europe, the 463rd Bombardment Group returned to the United States in June 1945. The group was inactivated on 12 September 1945 at Sioux Falls Army Air Field, South Dakota, and its personnel demobilized.


Overall, the 463rd Bombardment Group played a significant role in the strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany during World War II, contributing to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.
