Historical context: Workers' Sports Union (DTJ) is the usual name and abbreviation of organizations belonging to the Czech and Slovak DTJ movement.
Their task is physical education and health, spiritual and moral upliftment of the working class on the ideological basis of democratic socialism.
The movement arose at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as a split from Sokol, after a history interrupted by communist totalitarianism, it was revived in the Czech lands in the 1990s.
In 1918, the DTJ joined the International Socialist Union for Physical Education and Sport, which was founded in 1913 and later moved from Ghent, Belgium to Prague.
In 1921, the first international Workers' Olympics was held in Frankfurt (the Olympiad originally planned for 1915 was canceled due to the war).
The second was held in 1927 in Prague, the third in 1931 in Vienna.
The DTJ union organized frequent trips abroad.
On June 12 - 29, 1921, the First Workers' Olympics was also held in Prague.
23,000 people - men, women, teenagers and young adults - as well as 104 cyclists and 312 soldiers trained at the Leten stadium.
131 foreign guests from Belgium, Germany and Finland also joined. Exercise demonstrations were complemented by a festive scene "At the dawn of a new era", which was created by 2,500 people, and athletics competitions were also held.
The program was accompanied by social evenings, concerts, exhibitions and theater performances for adults and children.
In the 1930s, the movement continued to develop and other international workers' Olympics were held.
Initially, the basis was simple gymnastics and on tools according to Tyrš's gym system, the association rejected sport as such and high-level exercises, e.g. velocipedes.
However, ball games were also introduced from 1924, swimming from 1925, youth scouting from 1920, and in some regions DTJ also cultivated winter sports and tennis.
The units also held cultural activities, for example puppet theaters for children, social entertainment, trips, etc. (Wiki).
