Flack influenced the subgenre ofcontemporary R&B called quiet storm and was the first artist to winthe Grammy for record of the year for two consecutive years: "TheFirst Time Ever I Saw Your Face" won in 1973 and "Killing Me Softlywith His Song" won in 1974.

 

Killing Me Softly wasreleased on August 1, 1973, on Atlantic Records. She recorded the album withproducer Joel Dorn for 18 months. The album reached number three on theBillboard chart and number two on the Soul LPs chart. The Album was certifiedgold on August 27, 1973, and double platinum on January 30, 2006.
