* A handsome, stylised mask from the Bamana (Bambara) people
of Mali. The mask showcases an elongated engraved face with a long and thin
nose, downward cast eyes and a mouth with raised lips. The face, with its geometrical etchings, is topped with
antelope styled horns. As antelopes are venerated throughout Mali, symbolic of swiftness
and endurance, such iconography is a widespread feature of their carvings. It
is suggested that artefacts such as these were ceremonially employed during
initiation rites and in anticipation of good fortune (e.g. successful expeditions
or fruitful harvests), serving as protective symbols.
* The piece is approximately 34cm in length and 10cm
in depth, weighing 811 gms.
* The object is in good vintage condition with
surface wear commensurate with age (as photographed).
