Description

Over 135-year-old antique paper treasure.

Offered for sale is an 1879 Victorian wood engraving from the November 29th issue of Punch magazine, of a political satire cartoon by John Tenniel. The engraver was Joseph Swain. The engraving is entitled "Pull, Devil! Pull, Baker!" - and shows Russia and Valentine Baker (1827-87) AKA Baker Pasha, on either end of a tug-of-war. Valentine Baker entered the service of the Ottoman Army in their war with Russia (Russo-Turkish War) in 1877.

Joseph Swain (1820-1909) was a wood engraver of cartoons by Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) the principal political cartoonist for Punch magazine for over 50 years, and the illustrator of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. In the late 19th century Joseph Swain's wood engravings were generally printed from electrotypes, but those done for Punch were printed from the original wood-blocks, hence their value to collectors.

Condition very good with moderate wear and paper is yellowed. Measures about 8.25 by 11 inches (21 x 27.5 cm).
