Late 18th Century Travel Map Through Japan, Long folding Woodblock Map. 1790

A very interesting and long folding travel map of Japan. This is a woodblock print circa late 18th century. The map is titled, 『改正日本道中行程記/Kaisei nihon dōchū kōteiki』meaning "Revised Travel Road Map in Japan." By the mid Edo period in the 18th century, it was common tradition for commoners to pay visits for famous shrines, at least once in their lifetime, and thus there was a huge demand for travel goods, including precise maps like yours. There seemed to have been published in many different editions of "Road Maps" for this purpose, including tips for novice travellers. The entire map of Japan is drawn from eastward (from Kyushu to Ezo) although the print is read from right to left that is westward. Here are several digitized resources in similar titles held at Japanese institutions.1. 大日本道中行程細見記/ Dainihon dōchū kōtei saikenki (1804) held by Kyoto University, Japanhttps://rmda.kulib.kyoto-u.ac.jp/item/rb00011650#?c=0&m=0&s=0&cv=88&r=0&xywh=-8451%2C-285%2C22517%2C41602. 大日本道中行程細見記/Dainihon dōchū kōtei saikenki (1837)held by Tokushima University, Japanhttps://kochizu.gsi.go.jp/items/2133. 大日本道中行程細見記大全/ Dainihon dōchū kōtei saikenki taizen (?) held by Kumano kodo senta https://kumanokodocenter.com/exhibition/210601-2/
