The chisel was recently obtained from an sale, shows well cared for, exact era unknown.

I believe this is an early framing straight edge wood socket chisel, made by the G.I. Mix & Co. out of Yalesville, CT., we are not 100% for sure of the era.

From resources: The G. I. Mix & Company was out of Yalesville, Ct., near Wallingford, CT. This company has few resources. I believe the company was first in operation, around 1810 as the J W Mix & Co., under directions of the founder John W Mix. I believe the company in 1810 thru 1830s’ and was manufacturing bayonets, for the Federal Government, and the company was a sub contractor for Eli Whitney who invented the cotton gin.

In the 1850’s (I believe 1854) son Garry I. Mix took over the company, and the name was changed to the G.I. Mix & Co., and started manufacturing metal ware and flatware. About 1880’s the company started producing household goods (britannia spoons and cutlery) and carpenter tools. The company during that era was known as a fine edge tool maker. I believe sometime in the early 1900’s – 1920’s the company ceased operation, but not 100% for sure of the exact era.

The chisel is stamped on the upper blade G. I. MIX & CO.

The chisel is 15 3/4” in overall length, and 9 5/8" long from the blade tip to the end of the socket.  The blade is a framing straight edge and is 3/4" wide.

The chisel is in good condition and has been cleaned, has a New home made hardwood handle fitted and installed...the blade edge is sharp but needs a fine honing.... As with the vintage of the chisel, there is some normal wear, a few minor dings, and some discoloration, all as noted from the photos.

The chisel is SOLD AS IS with NO RESERVE. e-mail questions before bidding
