TIBETAN VENTURE

IN THE COUNTRY OF THE NGOLO-SETAS:

SECOND GUIBAUT-LIOTARD EXPEDITION

ANDRE GUIBAUT

LONDON: JOHN MURRAY/ READERS UNION
1949

Not all scientists are adventurous; and scientific adventurers, when they appear, are not always capable of putting the account of their discoveries into graphic literary shape. Andre Guibaut is a very rare combination of scientist, adventurer and writer. His expedition through the country of the Ngolo-Setas was undertaken in the interests of scientific knowledge. It involved a difficult journey, among wild and often dangerous tribesmen: and he has now recorded what befell him in one of the most exciting travel-books since Doughty's Arabia Deserta. Ambushed on a lonely mountain pass, he barely escaped with his life and lost his friend and companion, Louis Liotard. The days of suspense which led up to this catastrophe are extraordinarily well described. His book, moreover, contains fascinating descriptions of the strange Tibetan landscape, of the life of peasants and officials, and of the customs and observances of the huge Tibetan monasteries.
