THE DIARY OF A SOLDIER OF FORTUNE

STANLEY PORTAL HYATT

COLLINS

No date, circa 1920. First published in 1910.

Hyatt recounts his numerous adventures in a variety of exotic ports of call. While in Rhodesia, he hunted hippo, sable, waterbuck, and the like, and was a proponent of the large caliber rifles: "... the modern small-bore is a delusion and a snare when used for big-game shooting." The hunting occupies only a few pages of his quite-varied narrative. (Czech, Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books.)

Hyatt left England in the early 1890s to seek his fortune, first in Australia then Africa, where he tried his hand as a prospector, trader, and transport rider. Eventually disillusioned with Africa he decide to head home by travelling east, where he fought in the Philippines for the American Army.
