Item Description
Japanese painter Daijo Aoki.
He died of heart failure on April 5th at his home in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture. He passed away at the age of 91. His real name is Seiichiro.
He was born on May 1, 1894 Meiji 27 in Tennoji Ward, Osaka, and after graduating from Tennoji Junior High School, he studied Western painting at the Kyoto Kansai Art Institute, and also studied Japanese painting at the Kyoto Painting College.
In 1924, he opened the Shintosha Western Painting Research Institute and held exhibitions. In 1935, he disbanded this and thereafter turned to Japanese painting. In 1937, he founded the Dainichi Art Institute with Somei Yuuki and Kotora Kawasaki, and held public exhibitions to create a new style of Japanese painting. In 1952, he disbanded the institute and traveled to Europe, the United States and China, publishing his research works. In 1969, he held a retrospective exhibition at Otakashimaya in Tokyo, and in 1978, he held the Boneju Exhibition'' sponsored by Asahi Shimbun. His paintings, which are based on realism and have a deep, somber atmosphere, exude his unique artistic style.
His representative works include Sinking Heart'' 1924 , Bonfire 1937 , Ancient Earthenware'' 1959 , Tai'' 1967 , Big Sea Bream'' 1977 , and Smile of Nature'' 1978 .
