He has over 60 children's books to his credit and is also an actor and director. He was associate director of the National Theatre Company in Perth and artistic director of the Toe Truck Theatre in Sydney. He has written plays for young audiences which have been performed all over the world and include Year 9 Are Animals and Stella and the Moon Man. He has also adapted a number of best-selling books for the stage including Robin Klein's Hating Alison Ashley, Space Demons by Gillian Rubinstein, Stage Fright stories by Paul Jennings, and Midnite by Randolph Snow.Richard's many television credits include Playschool and 150 episodes of Bananas in Pyjamas. It also won the 1990 Australian Children's Book of the Year Award, Older Readers, and was shortlisted for the 1990 Victorian Premier's Literary Award and the 1990 NSW Premier's Literary Award. This outstanding novel was named a White Raven book at the 1990 Bologna Children's Book Fair.Her novel for older readers, The Listmaker, won the 1990 South Australian Festival Award for Literature.In 1991 Robin Klein was awarded the Dromkeen Medal for her significant contribution to the appreciation and development of children's literature in Australia.
