Historical context: Rudolf Altrichter (1916-1978) was a Slovak artist and graphic designer, self-taught.
He was born in Vienna, but spent his childhood in Trencin, where he graduated from the business academy in 1938. After finishing his studies, he was employed as a salesman at Bata in Svit and Bratislava, while he devoted himself to artistic creation in his spare time.
In 1948, he co-founded the Association of Artists and Friends of Graphics and in 1949 the Union of Slovak Visual Artists together with Orest Dubay and Ernest Zmetak.
In 1950, he left his business career and started making a living as a freelance artist, mainly as a creator of posters (exhibition, film, social and political) and free graphics.
Among his most important works are a series of author's socio-political posters and an identity for the Slovak Hunting Association.
He won several awards for his work and exhibited in Bratislava, Grenada, Warsaw, Frankfurt, Berlin and Vienna.
His work is characterized by the use of structured form, optical games, experiments with writing and psychedelic shapes (Slovenske Centrum Dizajnu).
According to memories of his family members, Rudolf Altrichter was often underrated by his colleagues which graduated from arts, so he always needed to fight for his space on the artist scene.
Despite the fact that he created behind the iron curtain, during the communist regime, many of his works dedicated to political themes can rightly be called timeless and unique!
