Description

Offered for sale is a late 1800s Victorian cabinet photograph of a middle-aged man. Photographer was "Philpot, Springvale ME."

Frederick "Fred" C. Philpot (1856-1925) was a store owner and well known photographer in the area. He had a sad life: in 1876 his father hanged himself when Fred was 20, in 1880 his wife died a month after the birth of their son, and his store burnt down in 1905, during the devastating Springvale Fire. He spent the rest of his years concentrating on his photography with the aid of his sister Kate. He had a carriage set up as a traveling studio for those who lived far from the town.

The photo measures about 6.5 by 4.25 inches (16.5 x 10.75 cm). Please enlarge pictures for best view of condition.
