A Satsuma-Ware Deep Bowl

Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century

Decorated in enamels and gilt, the centre well decorated with a pair of white doves perched in a large blossoming plum tree in a lush garden full of flowers, a red temple complex in the distance, the exterior decorated with a continuous band depicting a maple tree, blooming wisteria and lotus; signed on the underside in gilt Genzan. 


8.6cm x 21.9cm (3 3/8in x 8 5/8in).


Consigned to a Bonhams sale in late 2023.


Condition report

In overall very good condition. There is a manufacture/firing fault that is difficult to notice on the inside wall of the bowl. There is also one area of gilt rubbing around the rim of the bowl.
