The steam locomotive 18 314 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) in the GDR, later called “Schorsch”, has an unusual, even extraordinary life story. Once put into service in 1919 as a Baden “noble racer” of the “IV h” series, the DRG took it over as 18 314. After the end of the Second World War, the locomotive was sent to the Soviet zone in exchange for an S 3/6, where the later VES-M Halle urgently needed a fast four-cylinder compound steam locomotive for test runs. In order to become Noch faster, in 1960 she was given a Reko boiler, partial fairing, a new driver's cab and tender as well as a green paint job. The icing on the cake was the conversion to oil-fired main combustion in 1967. It was shut down at the end of 1971 and sold to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1984.
