Silver Greek Drachm (14.9mm, 3.44g.) Abdera, Thrace, struck 412-347 B.C. Unpublished in standard references type. This small and interesting Greek silver coin features the Janiform heads of two satyrs. Satyrs were mythological human like figures with the heads of goats and oftentimes depicted as having an erect phallus. Representations prior to 600 BCE depict the satyr with horse like legs. Janiform satyrs are found also on coinage of neighboring island of Thasos.

This issue was hand-struck (hammered) in Plovdiv, Bulgaria (ancient Roman province Philippopolis). It goes without saying you always get the exact item in the picture.

Abdera was an important ancient city on the Thracian coast, eleven miles east-northeast of the mouth of the Nestos River, almost directly opposite the island of Thasos. Some of the most stylistically pleasing coinage of the ancient world was struck in this Thracian city. Many of these coins bringing top dollar in international ancient coin auctions.
