Compatible with all MD standards for music, including the new Hi-MD format, which is a further evolution of the conventional MD format. This groundbreaking recording format achieves high capacity while maintaining the compact size of MD, and dramatically improves the quality required for music playback, such as sound quality during recording and long recording times. In addition to 1GB Hi-MD discs for recording, conventional MD discs can also be formatted into Hi-MD for Hi-MD mode recording. Of course, conventional MD discs can also be used to record in conventional MD modes such as MDLP (LP2/LP4/MONO).
The system supports linear PCM recording, which was not possible with conventional MD recording. Linear PCM allows recording without compressing the sound source, so users can enjoy high-quality music playback without sacrificing CD sound quality.
The Hi-MD is equipped with a "High Speed ATRAC DSP" that provides superior processing performance in all modes, including Hi-MD AUDIO recording mode "Hi-SP/Hi-LP" and MDLP. It also features "24-bit processing," which performs all digital signal processing, including D/A and A/D converters and ATRAC, at the highest precision of 24 bits, to realize the overwhelming quality of Hi-MD in total recording and playback.
Using a 1GB high-capacity Hi-MD disc, it is possible to record for up to approximately 34 hours. This is approximately 6 times greater recording capacity than conventional MDs. In addition, conventional MD discs can be converted to Hi-MD format using Hi-MD's high-density recording technology. This enables long recording times of up to 10 hours, approximately double that of conventional MDs.
