Michael Jackson's epic "Thriller," which won a record eight Grammy Awards, shattered the boundaries of all musical genres, and forever changed the concept of pop music and music videos. Since its release on November 30, 1982, Thriller has spent more than 500 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Albums Chart, and has been at #1 for a total of 37 weeks. It has sold over 100 million albums in total. It was also the first album in history to stay in the Top 10 for 80 weeks after its release, and only one other title besides "Thriller" has achieved this feat in the subsequent 40 years. In its 112th week on the Billboard Albums Chart (October 30, 1984), it became the first album in history to be certified 20x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA); in 2015, it became the first album in history to be certified x30 platinum; and it is currently a 34x platinum album.

Globally, "Thriller" has reached #1 in virtually every country in the world, including the UK, France, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, South Africa, Spain, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and apartheid South Africa. In Japan, "Thriller" reached No. 1 on the Oricon Album Charts in 1984 and has sold over 2 million copies in Japan to date. 1985 saw it recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the "best-selling album of all time," and it remains the "best-selling album in human history" with over 100 million copies sold. It continues to be the "best-selling album in the history of mankind" with over 100 million copies sold. Seven songs from the album became Top 10 singles, with "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" reaching number one. The music of Thriller was unique at the time, defying any previous definitions of rock, pop, or soul. Eddie Van Halen's incendiary guitar on "Beat It," a new fusion of pop and rock, seemed to drown out the longstanding divide between black and white music. Girl is Mine" (with Paul McCartney), in which two men - one white, the other black - bicker over a girl. The analog version will be released with a commemorative 40th anniversary jacket design. Mobile Fidelity will also release an UltraDisc One-Step/33rpm/180g weight vinyl 1LP limited to 40,000 numbered copies worldwide, remastered from the original analog master tapes and pressed by RTI in high sound quality, as well as a SACD The original Thriller album will be released as a hybrid.
