The Lithuanian Mint continues to introduce to the unparalleled beauty of Africa’s wildlife and adds a new coin to the Wild Africa series – a coin about the mysterious satanic leaf-tailed gecko (Uroplatus phantasticus) – ‘Do You See Me’?

The satanic leaf-tailed gecko is one of the thirteen recognized species of gecko lizards in the genus of Uroplatus. These species were discovered on the island of Madagascar in the 17th century. The satanic leaf-tailed gecko is found only in the mountainous rainforest on the island of Madagascar, just off the southeast coast of Africa. These reptiles are small, ranging from 6.3 to 8.9 centimeters in length, including the tail.
All leaf-tailed geckos have long, at bodies with triangular heads. This small lizard can be pink, grey, brownish or orange. Its color range is reminiscent of the appearance of decaying leaves in the wild. The reptile’s body is curved like the edge of a leaf, the lines carved into the skin are like the veins of a leaf, and the shape and color of the tail make it difIcult to distinguish it from a real leaf that has been gnawed on by insects. The satanic leaf-tailed gecko remains invisible throughout the day as it rests and waits for the night. As soon as the sun goes down, it goes looking for food. The gecko’s huge eyes have no pupils, making it easier to spot prey in the dark. The gecko’s diet is quite varied – like many lizards, it is believed to eat whatever it can catch and fit it in its mouth: from crickets to spiders and even snails.

The reverse of the ‘Do You See Me’? coin features the mesmerizing eye of the satanic leaf-tailed gecko in ery hues. A special UV varnish technology has been used to make it look realistic – the eye is convex, as if a real reptile were looking at you.
