The Cao Dai Sect - Military Operations - 1940s to 1950s

The Cao Dai sect sought autonomy and over the period of 15 years fought with the Japanese, the Viet Minh and the French. They were eventually destroyed as a military force by the Viet Minh at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

During the Japanese occupation, Caodaist followers joined the Phục Quốc movement led by Prince Cuong De, a descendant of King Gia Long, seeking to restore Vietnam's independence.

Despite being unrecognized by the Nguyen dynasty and the French, they aimed to establish a central government with three autonomous local governments.

In the 1940s, Caodaist dignitaries supported the Axis powers, hoping for Cuong De's reign and official recognition of Caodaism. However, French colonial authorities closed the Tay Ninh Holy See, suppressed Caodaist officials, and exiled Pham Cong Tac.

In response, Tran Quang Vinh formed a pro-Japanese Caodaist army. When unable to rely on Japanese support, Vinh cooperated with the Viet Minh against the French.

France later reversed its stance, recognizing the République autonome de Cochinchine and offering political cooperation to Caodaists.

In 1946, the Viet Minh launched a campaign against Caodaism, prompting Caodaist dignitaries to request rearmament from France to protect their followers. The Holy See exploited this agreement to create its army, collaborating with France and fighting the Viet Minh.

After France's defeat in 1954, negotiations in Geneva may have influenced the future of Caodaism. Pham Cong Tac sought to restore political stability in Caodaist-controlled areas, but faced pressure and repression from the Ngo Dinh Diem regime. Tac was exiled, and many followers abandoned their autonomy project, joining other factions or going into hiding
