Condition: The First Day Cover is in excellent condition with no smears or stains.

Background To Issue: The Japanese occupied Christmas Island in 1942, took the remaining Europeans as prisoners of war and attempted to mine the phosphate. They withdrew at the end of 1943. The island was relieved in October 1945 by the British.
