Reign
in Blood, released in 1986, is simply a classic album from the American
thrash metallers Slayer - it is in the same league with its 1985
predecessor Hell Awaits. The guitar riffs on this album from Kerry King
and the late Jeff Hanneman are just outstanding, just like their guitar
work on Hell Awaits; Dave Lombardo's drum work is excellent as well,
along with the bass guitar work and vocals from Tom Araya. All of the
songs on Reign in Blood are great, but the ones that really stand out
for me are the classic opening track "Angel of Death" which is based on
Josef Mengele, the Nazi physician who carried out human experiments on
patients at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War Two
(Slayer often got a lot of flak for "Angel of Death" from certain people
which led to the band facing accusations of Nazi sympathising and
racism throughout their career, even though they do NOT encourage or
condone Nazism or racism at all); "Piece by Piece"; "Necrophobic";
"Criminally Insane"; and "Raining Blood". The album also contains two
bonus tracks, a re-recording of "Aggressive Perfector" (the original
recording of this song is on their 1984 EP Haunting the Chapel) and a
remix of "Criminally Insane".
