This record was recorded by Supertramp the British rock band that formed in London in 1970. Initially a prog-rock group, they began moving towards a more pop-oriented sound with their third album in 974 and the band reached their commercial peak mid to late 70s. As of 2007, Supertramp album sales exceeded 60 million. They attained significant popularity in North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia. Their highest sales levels were in Canada, where they had two diamond-certified (ten-times platinum) albums (Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America), and their only number 1 singles anywhere ("The Logical Song" and "Dreamer").

Crime of the Century is their third studio album, released in October 1974 on A&M Records. Crime of the Century was Supertramp's commercial breakthrough in many countries, most notably in the UK, Canada and Germany where it peaked in the Top 5 while also making the Top 20 in Australia and France. It was an improvement over their previous sales in the US, but still only peaked at No. 38, with the US hit being Bloody Well Right. School was another popular track, particularly at album rock-oriented radio stations. The album was eventually certified Gold in the US in 1977 and In Canada, it was eventually certified Diamond (sales of one million copies).
